Meyer, Stephenie. Twilight
In high school, when I started getting into Japanese manga, I think it was in large part because Japanese pop culture understands so well that what you want in reality and what you fantasize about can be two entirely different things. (Some American fiction does this too--romance novels, for example. But then we throw up our hands and whine about what bad messages they're sending). My high school friend and I once had a discussion about some of the various good-looking men in anime, and how you probably wouldn't actually want them around on a daily basis, washing dishes and mowing the lawn, even if they made great fantasy boyfriends. Japanese manga tend to say "Wouldn't this be awesome?" and leave it at that; the prototypical American fantasy, on the other hand, is The Wizard of Oz, which can't resist moralizing about how there's no place like home.
So this novel has much the same appeal of the lower grade of manga. Or, say, the TV show The O.C., which I invariably end up turning on when I get home from my Thursday evening class, even though I'm under no illusions that it's actually any good.
In this one, Bella Swan has recently moved from Phoenix to a tiny, rainy town in Washington to be with her father, the local police chief. At school, she meets five very strange, very beautiful people...one of whom, Edward Cullen, is especially strange, and especially beautiful, and reacts to her with ferocious love-hate intensity.
Dating a really intense guy with temper issues, who's majorly over-protective, who tells you himself repeatedly that he's dangerous and you shouldn't come near him... bad idea. Bad idea, no matter how hot he is. Especially when he is a vampire. Considering Bella's pathological clumsiness--she seemingly can't go an hour without falling over--and the fact that she actually wants to date this guy, I think she probably ought to go see a doctor and get checked out for neurological damage. But this is not the kind of book where the main character is going to suffer any consequences of her stupidity. She does get rather banged up at the end, it's true, but still--it's not a book that follows through its own implications very well.
If you want a book that Sends A Positive Message, this is not it. Not only does the girl fall in love with the beautiful mysterious protective man who is dangerous to everyone else but her (something that reads as potentially very abusive, anywhere outside the realm of fluffy fantasy), but the book also, like most vampire novels, reinforces the tired stereotype of men as driven by uncontrollable passions and women as gatekeepers of virtue. It also says that infatuation is the same thing as true love and that romantic love is the only thing that matters.
But the thing is, for a lot of women, the beautiful mysterious dangerous man is incredibly attractive, at least as a fantasy; and Edward is incredibly attractive. The prose style is highly ordinary, and even in the most sensual passages I wouldn't exactly call it that good; but it is kind of sexy. I mean, I'm torn. Half of the time I was going, "Hnnnn! Ew!" and half of the time I was going "Hee, hot vampire boy." I partly am nervous about the culture sending very messed-up messages about love and sex. But after much thought I have to say, more power to rich and active fantasy lives, because a rich and active fantasy life is what got me through high school without doing anything stupid. If I can make the distinction, it's not fair of me to assume that other high school kids wouldn't be able to make the distinction; and most of us have not been saved from making bad decisions simply by knowing intellectually that they're bad decisions. I wasn't. And I cannot think that reading fewer manga would have spared me in that case.
This is not a very good book. The prose is ordinary, the beginning drags, and the author has to bring in various kinds of implausibilities to get the right kind of ending. (The middle, by contrast, is much better). "She falls down a lot" is about as much attention as gets paid to characterization. And the book dances superficially around what most vampire romances really are about, on the surface or deep down--the death wish. It would have been a much more interesting book if it had confronted that for more than a sentence. But it's also compulsively readable, joyously trashy, and a lot of fun if you can compartmentalize it as fantasy.
(I'd recommend Annette Curtis Klause's Blood and Chocolate for dark paranormal romance that follows through with its implications much better but has some of the same sensual tone).
So...can you tell I'm procrastinating?

First off I would just like to say that i think this "Emily chick" is crazy. i thought Twilight was an AWESOME book, and Stephenie Meyer is an AMAZING author. In fact, that was the best book I've ever read! There was this fantastic, and almost unbelievable chemistry between Bella and Edward. The end of the book left you hanging, and i can't wait until the sequel(s) so i can see what happens next. LOVED ITT!!!
I'm very glad that you liked the book so much, but differing opinions of art are hardly grounds for declaring someone to be insane.
I realize how popular and well-loved "Twilight" is. But I'm entitled to an opinion, just as you are. And, you'll note, there are a lot of things I really liked about "Twilight." It's just that there were also things that troubled me about it.
Hmm.... I don't think that "trashy" is a very good way to put it. Stephenie Meyer is a new author without much experience, and she just wants to share her characters with people. I thought that while the prose was simple, it was still reliable in making the book a good read. Not all writing has to be overly descriptive and impeccable. It's not as good as books by Tolkien and Rowling, etc, but if all books were, there would be nothing special about them, would there?
I admit my use of the word "trashy" might not be the same as a lot of people, but I'll defend it; I don't think "trashy" is an entirely bad thing. To me it defines something that is a tremendous amount of fun, even as there's not much serious literary value or good writing there. And I think there's a place for that, and much of the time I'll choose something trashy over something "well-written" that's pretty boring.
So, you know, I agree with you.
Most of my issues with Twilight were with the gender politics, not with the quality of the prose.
I don't understand how you find Twilight "trashy". And it is definately a good read! I don't understand you. It is seriously the best book ever. Anything else I say would really just be copying the first "anonymous" person's comment.
DUDE, SERIOUSLY, how many times do I have to explain that I'm using 'trashy' in context as a mild, ambivalent compliment?
Points off for reading comprehension.
I really don't see how this book is sending a bad message. It's wonderfully written, and I think that if anything, it is giving hope to average, awkward, and clumsy teenagers that can relate to Bella. I believe that it sends the message that there is someone out there for everyone, and that you shouldn't be afraid to give love a chance, no matter how risky it may seem. Bella and Edward's love is so pure, and it can hardly be seen as 'sensual'.
I aplaud your review of Twilight. Very accruate to the book, I felt you did it justice. The book, to many of it's readers, aka the female population, are infatuated with this book because of the unbelievable romance and have no intentions of looking past the thin surface of the books mediocre writing to see that the book, really, sucks. Many people will condradict you and I, but Twilight it really a book that sends bad expectations to girls. Imagine: if you met Edward, based on the way he treats girls outide of his family and Bella, you wouldn't like him. Or Bella, either really.
Twilight is overrated, overrapreciated, and overthought. Did you see New Moon? Whatever. It was Only sort of pointless. Edward needs to be slapped sooo much in both of the books. Maybe his mysoginistic ideals can be blamed on the fact that he was born in a mysiginistic time, but maybe not. After all, he is a know-it-all-listen-here-Bella-listen-to-me-Because-you-are-silly-and-I-know-all-the-answears kind of guy.
I finally know how to describe this book, thank you.
Unfortunately, I just couldn't put it down. I often thought to myself, 'This isn't all that great, but it still pulls me in because of that Edward boy... wtffff, damn good-looking people.'
This doesn't mean it's the greatest book of all time, just that one character makes me want to fangirl because he looks so good. Other than the way he's physically described, though, he feels like a stalker with supernatural powers.
However, what other comments on this book have said are... Uh. Well. CERTAINLY opinionated! I'm not sure if I'd ever viewed Edward as a misogynist. I knew he disliked a lot of humans because he could read their thoughts. I'd probably not like people, either, in this situation. I mean, I don't like a lot of them now without having to hear anything, to be honest. He doesn't just think girls are dumb, he thinks there are quite a few dim males, too.
It's just that Bella IS silly. I'm torn between disliking her for having nothing more to her than clumsiness and liking her for being able to describe Edward's pretty little face to me. I do wish there was more to their 'love' than his looks and her... Wait, what does she have? Well, her Bellaness. I wish there was more to it, but there really isn't...
Nonetheless, it's nice to read such a fantasy, and it only bored me whenever one of the vampires weren't there to provide mental eye candy (mind candy?). So I did like it. :D But I didn't like some of it.
I still bought the sequel, too, hahaha. But I really didn't feel like reading anymore after this one thing happened. Bleh.
Emily you are intiteled to your opinions but twilights main carecter bella deosen't fall for edward becouse hes hot she falls for him when she gets to know him if she was the type of girl to fall for a guy just becouse he's hot or popular then woudn't she have fallen for Mike? Second of all Edward is afraid and I agree this is rather high hopes for a girl like bella but Mke one of the most popular guys in school fell for her and I dont see how edward treats females bad becouse he egnors them like he doese males??? Though I do not think your craz ybut i do think you need to take a good look at the book and read it carefuly maby my opnion will differ from yours becous unlike most people i dont like hary potter so i do think you have stated a good point
There is no plot, no good writing, no characterization, no conflict in this tepid, sagging book. It is just 400-page masturbatory book about a girl (who looks a lot like the author, what a nice coinky-dink) who falls in love (it just sort of happens, deus ex machina)with HAWT!1!11! vampire. The book meanders nowhere for the first 300 pages, then gets slightly pulse-pounding for the last 100. Edward is a temperamental "bad boy" (good teachings, Meyer. It's a perfectly good idea to get with a guy that might beat you in one of his frequent rages!) and Bella is stupid who lets Edward push her around and dictate her opinions, choices, and thoughts. Top that with bland writing that makes no effort to grasp the teenage voice, and you have a Literary Fart on your hands.
Hey, I liked the book too, but emily, what you said didn't bother me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and you shouldn't need to explain it to everyone else and morph your words to fit everyone else and make them happy.
Aye. everyones intilied to thier own opinion, but honestly, Twilight is a good book! They're making it into a movie! and it IS a manga in Japan!
There are MILLIONS of people world wide that would dissagree, and prolly miilions who would agree.
but the thing of it is, that Twilight, New Moon, Eclispe, Breaking dawn - They are all (and will be) great books! Although it may be hard to get into it, atleast read it more then once, becauase I didn't like it for a long time, either.
and now I have fan-art on my Deiviant Art page. its a long way to go, dontcha think?
>> New moon has "The death wish" in it. People nearly DO kill themselves...
WOW, I'm not alone out here. I thought this book sucked big time! I cannot understand the legions of fans out there that actually thought this had a point beyond "hot vampire boy"... Not to mention these people are a little over zealous. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but god forbid you have something bad to say about Twilight... Three cheers to you for stating your honest opinion!
I think twilight was the best book I've ever read in my life. I don't really care if there is no plot or anything, I just enjoy reading this book because part of me likes the parts where it's Bella's clumsiness, but also the romantic parts of Bella and Edward's relationship. I couldn't get it out of my head for about 2 weeks! but, it's okay, other people have their opions about this book.
I applaud you! Fnally someone thinks the same thing as I do.
I think I'm pretty safe to assume that only GIRLS like this book because of EDWARD.
Okay, lets take away Edward .. and we'll have .. Bella .. who has no personality .. and only her clumsiness. Who the heck wants to read about a girl who keeps complaining about the weather, thinks everyone she meets is stupid (even if they're friendly), but if they're really hot only then do they deserve her attention.
Bella is shallow.
Why did she begin to like Edward? Right. His awesome hot looks. Hellooooo, beautiful creature over there! Must obsess over him!
How dare she think that is true love?
"Hey I don't know you, but you look so damn hot that I'm in love with you. Knowing you comes later, love first. Lets make out."
Meyer tries to make Bella likable by making her stupid, dense, not smart, hypocrite, clumsy, 'typical teenager stereotype'.
The story itself .. it is 'meh'. Plain, ordinary, overused. Seriously, come with something better here before I bore to death.
What did I read about the last 300 pages?
Uhhhhh .. Edward's beautiful face .. Edward's beautiful chest ... Edward's beautiful arms ... oh .. and some vampire knowledge .. and .. Bella makes a huge fuss about what people might think of her (with people I mean Edward) .. and .. ehhhh .. the weather! Yes the weather. The last 300 pages I read was about ..
Bella complaining.
Bella being clumsy.
Bella obsessing over Edward.
Bella being mean towards other people.
Bella being suddenly super hot because she is the new girl.
I do agree that Meyer knows how to describe to people obsessed with each other. I mean .. they can stay with each other together and never have a real good covnersation! It's like .. a hug here, a kiss there, a stumble there .. What does their relationship have?
Edward thinks Bella smells damn good.
Bella thinks Edward just looks damn good.
Yay. These people are actually suited for each other because they are SHALLOW as hell.
I rest my case. I didn't like the main characters. Therefor, for me, the book just really sucked.
I truly liked the book -- in fact, it's my favorite book. Sure, Stephenie Meyer is new, but she has a lot of talent.
And I'm not going to become furious at those of you who bashed her, bashed her book, as well as her characters. Because that's your opinion, which I don't give a damn about.
First off, it's extremely rude to say things like, "Oh, these people are suited for each other because they're SHALLOW."
Stephenie Meyer worked hard to write this book, and create these characters. Authors have feelings, they're people as well.
Here's an example. Imagine yourself as five years old. You're just coming home from school, and you did a fingerpaint project. You worked hard on the picture, and you can't wait to show your parents. Well, when you get home, you say, "Look mommy, look what I made!"
Then, she looks at you, raises an eyebrow, and says, "That picture is horrible. I hate it. It's SHALLOW. Those colors are ugly. Basically, this is truly NOT a good picture. Go throw it away."
Wouldn't that leave just about any five-year old heart-broken? I know I would be. So, I think that those of you who said such rude things should be ashamed of themselves.
Also. When Bella meets someone, she doesn't automatically think, "Oh, they're stupid. I don't want to associate with them." No. Obviously, someone didn't pay attention to the book. At all.
I'll also point out the fact that Bella is an ORDINARY TEENAGER. Yes, an ordinary teenager. At one point in everyone's teenage years, they complain about something, and they obsess over someone who is attractive. (Let's call this obsession a 'crush', shall we?)
Edward's and Bella's relationship has a 'hug or a kiss there' because unless you forgot, Bella's blood is more appealing to Edward's then anyone else's, therefore, he has trouble controlling his thirst around her. It's difficult for him to even be with her, even more difficult for him to kiss her. Someone really hasn't paid any attention to the book...
Edward doesn't just like Bella for her scent. If that was the case, she would be dead already. Bella doesn't just like Edward for his looks. If THAT was the case, then they wouldn't even be a couple.
I'll end my rant there.
personally I love the book, but I also think that the book is very gender stereotypical....
The book is vaugly detailed, and it doesn't prattle on about the setting s too much and the charactors are well developed. The book is also rightly labled as young adult using speech people our age should know and be able to understand (Bella's mindset mostly. whereas Edward is more refined and uses words, such as 'ostentatious,' where we vaugly know what it means through context clues, but we still have to think a little)
it reminds me alot of InuYasha.... the whole 'he is too good for me' and 'I am not good enogh for her' type thing is in both books, well manga for InuYasha. ANd the whole anger thing that InuYasha and Edward has going on is almost the same... swear those two have PMS some days.. lol Plus both charactors have the whole mysterious, sexy thing going on... well Edward wears it better....
god... im prattling on about it.. lol well i LOVE the book but it also has its setbacks... that basically what i am trying to say.. but i probably love it more then it has setbacks...
well to clarify some things i said vagely detailed.. i ment it litterally it is vague in detales but it is also very dtealied but not so much as to bore me so i would have to scip some paragraphs.. like some books are way to detailed.. i hate that..
also i think Bella's just infactuated with him.. i think that his ability to 'dazzle' has something to do with it...
I really enjoy this book and the sequal new moon. I admit that part of it is Edward and the fact that he is so attractive, however if the book had nothing other than Edward there is no way I could have made it through New Moon. The story is also very original. A "good" vampire is a new twist. How can you say that their relationship is based entirly on making out. Edward spends three days asking Bella about every detail of her life. From her favotite color to what she misses most about he home. These parts are not talked about so much because most readers are not interested in that sort of thing. Edward says that the thing he likes most about Bella is the fact that she(her mind) is different. Edward had many gorgeous vampires to chose from and he chose an ordinary human. When reading this book you have to remember that it is not anti-feminist, or anti-intelligence, But anti-HUMAN!
I know this is long but please bear with me...
I am a [Straight] MALE who actually liked this book. And being a guy i think i am not subject to many of the things that the girls are (like the fact that they cant stop drooling over Edward) so i could see past Edwards looks and really look at the people and the personalities in this book.
First of all i have to say that i totally disagree that Bella only likes Edward for his looks. if you can recall Bella actually started out hating Edward for his blatant hatred towards her at the beginning of the book. But after he started talking to her and apologized for the way he acted she started to see what he was like. I do have to admit that Bella was attracted to his looks at first but as ever sociologist or psychologist knows, the first stage of love is lust.
Then infatuation. She cant get Edward out of her mind. Not only because she has a crush on him but because he has a secret that she has to find out. For those of you that think Bella has no personality this is where we start to see it. Bella is stubborn and very observant, if i might say so myself. She starts to get the dirt on the Cullens form Jake and then she begins her research.
At this point i have to applaud Stephenie Meyer for her creative and original adaptation of the age old vampire. it changed my whole perception of the blood-suckers.
I will admit that most of this book is without a adventurous plot and is mostly about relationship development and the daily activities of vampires but she (Stephenie Meyer) does a good job of garnishing her first novel with just enough action to keep you entertained and not stray to far from the original idea. and New Moon does an excelant job as a sequel and starts and awesome plot with amazing twists and a cliff hanger to die for!
But now i would like to address a matter that has been bothering me... it is true, most of the book is relationship building, but all of you anti-Twilight people say the relationship is superficial and that Edward seems to have abusive tendencies (aside form the fact that he tells Bella he would never let anything hurt her like a Brazilian times!)
Well here is how i see it...
Edward and Bella both lack romantic background, so they are both doing what feels right, or natural, to them. Hence, Edward watching Bella as she sleeps, which also shows that Edward is going through the Infatuation stage too. Also it is clearly stated the Bella is average looking so obviously Edward isn't compelled by her stunning beauty. and if Bella only likes Edward for his looks then when not Jasper? why not Emmet, Carlisle, or Laurent for that matter? No, there is something more in Edward. They make each other happy. She hums to herself the day that Edward is supposed to come and pick her up for their date. Edward has never been happier (according to his family) and he even composed a song for Bella. You just have to find the little things that add up to the big picture.
Also Edward had not hurt anyone in his rage (except that poor tree branch... may it rest in peace) and i know he would never hurt Bella. (sorry for the side note...)
I don't know about you (and you are entitled to your own opinion) but this seems like the real thing to me. And if you cant see that, then great! I wish you the best of luck in your relationships. but this is what i am looking for. If I'm not singing in the shower it is not true love. and to those of you who think that this is all crap and it is not real love and that this is a poor book all i have to say is (and please please please don't take this the wrong way... i don't want to offend anybody)i really don't think you payed close enough attention... or you must have had some kind of prejudice towards this book before hand. (sorry again if i made you mad)
I did have trouble understanding there love at first and i did think they were kind of shallow (but i think some of that was because i was a guy) so i have been on both sides, but i hope you can be open to what i have said. it made my reading experience much more pleasant.
Also i would say it helps to read New Moon and then go back and read them both again because it shows that they have gotten to the final stage of love (attachment) and it really strengthens their bond.
*Spoiler Alert*
I wouldn't kill myself just because i was attracted to someone physically. Also if you read New Moon twice you really start to like Jacob and that kiss at then end wouldn't have been so bad
*End of Spoilers*
So there you have it... sorry it was so long but i am glad i got it all off my chest... in conclusion, this book it defiantly worth reading (At Least Twice!) and i will follow the whole series... and you will see me at the Eclipse Prom hopefully with the girl i will talk about in my "P.S."!
P.S. my friend (who is a that girl) has read twilight 10 times and New Moon like 6 times and she practically tied me down so i would read them both but i am glad she did.
yes, i agree. this "emily" chick DEFINITELY doesn't share my undying love for this book. but on the other hand, i haven't read the manga version. Just the original. Which, in my opinion, the original is always the best. maybe not as trashy, but certainly better. And, I have already read BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE and i agree, it is an amazing book. But, personally, it can never compare to TWILIGHT or NEW MOON
OMG!! Twilight/New Moon are THE BEST books ever!! my friends and I are so obsessed that we made a site... please check it out and leave what you think about the books :)

Emily,I will say that at first I was questioning your logic on the book, then I realized you were right. Twilight IS a book about infatuations that are shallow and pointless.
It is also true that it is just a little fantasy that people (mainly girls) like to lose themselves in. But who can blame them?
With the world the way it is I would probably be safer with a VAMPIRE than any other abusive creep wandering about in the streets. At least when it's a vampire you've got something nice to look at.
Stephenie Meyer is a good writer, not the best, but a good one to say the least. Personally I love her books, but I feel it brings justice to see all point of views.
You have done a good job though, you've changed my mind. I did realize that in reality Edward would be a jerk because I'm not as appetizing or whatever as Bella. It's a fantasy. So what?
I'll admit I'm happiest when I'm dreaming.
So for the past week now I have been searching for this manga version of Twilight and....I'M TOTALLY AT A LOSS AS TO WHERE TO GET IT!!! So can anyone help a tortured soul? I feel so left out! All my friends are talking about it so apparently It's somewhere and it just dosen't want to be found. If anyone knows pleeease email me! T-T helppp...

Emily, your connection of this novel to shoujo manga is spot on. However, I think what a lot of people are missing here is your point that this is just a book. It is read for entertainment, and as a literary escape. I'm sure that while most girls will daydream about Edward, in all of his adonis glory, that's all they will do. Daydream. Most girls won't go out looking for a boyfriend like Edward. They understand the boundary between fiction and reality. Books should not have to contain only disney-channel messages. Sometimes they are purely escapist.
As for Bella's characterization, I think the author's intention is to create a character that readers can relate to. She is someone who, although she has few distinguishing characterists, embodies a lot of the characteristics of American teenaged girls. I think that a lot of the reason that some people find her so dull is that she is so much like everyone else. But this is an accomplishment, not a problem.
Although I admit that the prose was nothing special, I still think that it is very effective. There were many scenes where very abstract concepts and imagery were portrayed extremely effectively.
I have read *a lot* of books, many especially in the vampire novel category, and Twilight stands out. I really enjoyed reading it. And just so you know, one of my close MALE friends has read this book and deemed it as one of his favorites. Yes, the intended audience is female, and yes, most guys would be rather put off by the plot, but it is a testament to this novel that it can be enjoyed by both sexes if given an opportunity.
I know you can have your own opinion and shit, but werent ya being a little bit harsh on the book? I loved it its my favourite book ever. I do have to say that I didn't enjoy new moon as much. there wasnt enough Edward. Thank you for your opinion i enjoyed it!
Okay, trashing Twilight and New Moon is totally not ok with me. You can diss me and try to prove me wrong, but it's an enticing book full of the fantasy that we all wish was real. I for one believe in vampires no matter how stupid that sounds.
I mean I don't like the fact that my friends are drooling all over Edward. I fhe was real they woulg literally glomp him to death. But I for one would just like to be his friend. I like the Bella and Edward relationship that's in the book. I told all of my friends at and outside of school including my little cousin and they all devoured the book.
I agree that everyone has their own opinion, but still, if you don't like what the first few pages give you, then screw you and put down the f***ing book. I may sound harsh, but I can't help but fall in live with characters that Stephenie has created. I feel as if I personally know all of them. Not only that, but she dreamt most of the book up. I can't help but feel as if it's a premanition of what's to be and not of fantasy.
Getting a little to intense for my own good. LOL! See ya and to all those people who don't like Twilight...
SHOUTOUT... GO TO HELL WITH YOU!
In response to those who have defended the insipid prose of this novel, I shall say that, in my opinion, an author who describes every aspect of their story so elaborately, as a narrator, should avail himself of the opportunity to stray from the banal vernacular. A competent author should be able to make even a common description captivating, and the sentences which constitute sublime literature should be independently art.
I also wish that Stephenie Meyer had given other qualities to Edward, which could be ascribed to his age. Consider how much more interesting the characters' relationships would have been, had Edward possessed some profound wisdom, as can only be acquired with time and diligence, rather than the superficial knowledge of science and mathematics, which, if I recollect rightly, was all that was manifestly evinced. To a person of my tastes, the incongruity of his cultured mind in such an uncultured society would then have added a new level to his personality and aberrance. But, I suppose the people who would appreciate such an endowment are of a dying breed...
Like many others, I complain of the prolix composition, the simplicity of the characters, and the overzealous women who praise this novel without knowing what a true novel is.
However, there is one agreeable feature to this story. However ill developed the whole of it was, I cannot sincerely assert that I was entirely unmoved by it. For, much to my surprise, I could not prevent a few tears from escaping during the compelling climax of "Twilight."
Thank you, Emily. I think you've done an amazing thing in that you've been able to correctly analyze this story, seeing underneath the 'glittery' melodramatic surface, noting the aspects of this story that too many people are quick to gloss over.
A lot of the points that you have mentioned, particularly that about the relationship between Bella and Edward, are right on. But the problem is, just like you said, their relationship is so popular within the eyes of young fans who aren't especially well-read (which is why it's featured so much in popular YA novels and anime/manga) that they will never accept it as anything less than a beautiful romance.
I suppose that there will always be fans that will defend their book rabidly no matter how intelligent and well thought-out other people's differing opinions are. I suppose that's okay. After all, everyone's entitled to spend their parent's - uh I mean - their own money however they want. Hopefully though, others might be able to see some truth in what you've said, because it's very important. In my opinion, this book is actually quite dangerous to those who can't separate fantasy from reality, to those who actually believe that the kind of relationship Edward and Bella are portrayed to have is a strong, healthy and one, worthy of real life imitation. In fact, it's something that anyone can enjoy as a guilty fantasy so long as they realize that relationship like these rarely work out in real life (and quite often end in physical and/or emotional abuse).
But oh well. Everyone like what you want to like. But please stop slamming this one person for having an opinion that isn't: OMG TWILIGHT R AWESOME LYKE TOTLLY!
First off I want to say that whoever you are jeff I think I love you, Jk! But seriously it was nice to her a comment from a straight guy for once. Everything you said was totally right and any anti-twilight person needs to reread the story. I am an avid reader and reading a story more than once helps. I love the twilight series even though I have read better written books before. I thought the characters were interesting and annoying. Being a girl of course I was drawn to the physical aspects of Edward, but as the story progresses I found more in him. I agree w/ someone's comment in saying that if you weren't bella Edward would be a total snob jerk. And having read new moon and eclipse I have to say that I would have chosen jacob in the end. Edward is controlling and uses his "assests" aka smoldering and god like beauty to some what control bella. jacob is sooo much better. Any ways thats all I wnated to say.
P.S Jeff you need to call me, JK again. Though I give you props for reading and stating your views on the book!:)
Hi, I wrote the above comment and I want to add, after reading the comment above my first that having read many novels some being jane austen's that you are being stupid. Tha sounds mean, I'm sorry but I have to say that ,yes, as far as love stories and novels go the twilight series seem primitive but it is also in the YOUNG READERS section. I found twilight at the bookstore next to cheesy series dealing with girls from laguna beach. If you wanted an intense literary marvel read pride and prejudice or sense and sensibility. But twilight is just a book that brightened my day with a kind of innocent love story. It gave me something to think about while sitting in geometry class.
Twilight was definetly not my favorite book. Like all romances, some of the dialoge was a little... cheesy and a little bit over dramatic. But all in all, i thought it was a pretty good story, considering that stephenie had no experiance when she wrote it. But seriously "a good book is in the eye of the beholder." Okay, i know that isn't how it goes, but you get my point. No body will like a book the same way. And not everybody is going to like every book. We were made to have different opinions, so i'm not going to call anyone crazy or stupid or say that you've lost you're mind for being critical. I'm just saying that i agree with a few things and not others. But in my opinion, Twilight is a fantastic book and i'd recomend it to anyone.
finally!!! someone agrees with me!!! really, Edward wanted to kill himself, i wanted to kill myself from reading the same thing over and over again FOR HUNDREDS OF PAGES!!! why i read this book? ive got no clue... you made my day :D
I personally didn't like Twilight or New Moon. After reading it at first I was infatuated with the novels, but then it soaked in what I really read. The Bella and Edward relationship...doesn't have much depth to it. There's no real falling in love, they just...fall. Then in New Moon with the whole suicide/depression thing; that wasn't love, that was obsession. But eh, live and let live right? Everyone has their own opinion...^^
Twilight is the best. I am very much like Bella in a lot of ways, so I kind of relate with her. I mean, really, isn't Twilight what every girl could ever hope to have? A hot romance, an adventure, and that hope of being with the man you love more than anything... more than your own life, be with you Forever? New Moon and Eclipse really show how far Edward and Bella's love go.
Oh, and FYI-
My two of my good guy friends read twilight; they both like Bella. XD
I don't like how the romance was forced, as in something beyond simple attraction is what brings Ed and Bella together. Her alluring scent and the fact that Ed cannot read her mind. That just screams... wrongness- or something. It annoys me how only these unique traits which make Bella more mysterious and tempting to Edward through no purposeful intentions on Bella's part is what helps bring them together. That doesn't help the true love case.
But I can forgive Bella's obsession with Ed because Twilight is the first book, the character development in which the euphoria wears off and they form a healthy, "adult" I suppose- relationship would come in New Moon... well no; but given how for Bella, Ed was a fairy tale romance come true and she almost died and whatnot, I can still forgive her depressing actions because surely Bella and Ed will grow as characters in Eclipse! Wrong. They get worse. But this isn't about the sequels.
I'm not a drooling Ed fan so I can see him without fan girl bias: Ed is okay, he was suave, gentlemanly, and a pianist: drool material. His overprotective actions again can be attributed to the fact that Bella is his first love, she is a fragile human with a knack for getting hurt and he is head over heels for her so of course he will be overprotective. Ed certainly isn't my ideal guy (Jake is) so I'm not rabid for the series.
I just wish their relationship could be a healthy, normal one. Meyer tries too hard to try and sell this as even more romantic and epic than Romeo & Juliet.
Bella was likable and aside from her clumsiness- which is in the likes of Moe-Moe- she is realistic enough; her treatment towards her friends or anyone is ALWAYS based on looks. Eric is chess club and Bella ignores him intentionally or not, Jake is hot and Bella willingly talks to him. Bella doesn't say anything incriminating of this vanity but you can definitely see how vain she is.
I liked Twilight, its a teenage girl's fantasy romance come true; unfortunately if not here then the sequels definitely set a bad and not very romantic example for a relationship.
I agree with basically everything you said. I bloody hate that book. It's badly written, with little or no plot, the 'mystery' at the beginning regarding Edward being a vampire is ruined. It's on the back of the book, for God's sake. Meyer is a mediocre writer, to be painfully honest. I can understand why some people would love this book, but anyone who's read decent literature won't regard it highly.
This book was not "wonderfully" written, as some of you mentioned. Meyer did more telling than showing. There were abverbs, adverbs and adverbs galore which made the descriptions downright bland. And yes, the beginning and middle dragged. Bella did this at school, Bella did this after school, ooh Bella and Edward are talking! There was more talking than any action and it drove me nuts. When James tore up Bella in the end...it was like, "Damn, about time something happened."
Still, I was drawn to the books because Edward's too hot for my own good. A sad reason to like the books, but hey we're all free to read everything, anything.
Two thumbs up for your review. Yay!
Twilight it one of the worst book ever written. Bella is a horrible character- dare I even call her a character??? She has no hobbies or goals in life, no thoughts, simply NO BRAIN. It sends the very *positive* message that girls are helpless idiots who don't know how to walk properly, wander down dark alleys for no reason, and need men to succeed. And Edward is pretty much the exact same, except in buff vampire-dude form. As for hte writing, it was bland, dull, and put me to sleep.
DON't READ IT. There's no plot whatsoever and the characters are just plain offensive. She's even worse than Tamora Pierce, which I hardly thought possible.
I was extremelly offended by the "character- but agian I have to say she doesn't really have enough going on with her to be called a character- of Bella Swan. How this garbage ever got published is completely beyond me.
I agree with you completely. I intensely disliked Edward and could never imagine liking anyone of so little depth. I was baffled as to the hype surrounding this novel and wondered what kind of people would find these characters so fascinating...then I read all the answers you got to your review: obviously the illiterate, vapid, airheads who cannot spell to save their lives and have probably never picked up a book prior to Twilight. So there's my answer!
Rock on. It's sad to think that people can't seem to handle the fact that you disliked the book- when you were correct in all of your observations about it. Stephanie wrote it and published it and therefore it's in the public sector and everyone is allowed their own opinion about it, but geez, some of these fans are bordering on frighteningly crazy. The book was mediocre at best, especially in terms of writing style. Props to you for putting up with all this crazed backlash.
you know what? SCREW YOU.those are the most AMAZING books in the entire world, and you know what else? i thin kthat you are stupid if you think that there is anything even clsoe to being wrong with those books!!!! idk what's wrong with you, but if you don't have anything nice to say, then get off the internet, cuz' no one wants to hear it.....
oh and for all those "annoyomous" people who said crap about twilight and then were too scared to put their real names, screw you too.i would put my real name, but there's this stupid blcok on the computer that won't let me...

What about you? You're anonymous, if anything, you are the coward for bashing us but forming no solid argument other than this is Twilight and so must be perfect; and excuse us for having an opinion and being LITERATE.
This Book SUCKED!!!! and thank you so so so much for giving such a review.
How anyone could put up with 400 pages of complete crap is beyond me. I mean not only did it not have a plot; it sends girls, not to mention society all the wrong messages. Open your eyes people! This isn’t a patriarchal society anymore; girls have more rights than ever these days and this writer Stephanie Meyer is telling us that the only thing girls can do is gush over a hot man with absolutely no personality, fall over every two seconds (which is NOT a flaw by the way) and cook and clean? No where in these book did I read what Bella wanted to do with her life, what did she want to do in uni? Did she want to save starving people in Africa? NO!!!!!! Cause you know what she was doing? Walking into dark alleyways in the middle of the night because that wasn’t dangerous, and cheating on the man she claims to love. And you know what else? That wasn’t love!!! Love takes more than just looking hot; I bet that if Edward was ugly, Bella wouldn’t have taken a second look at him. It’s an insult to our intelligence and shatters what women have fought so long and hard for.
Twilight isn't literature, it insults literature.
Julie, I agree with you 100%.
I actually am one of the girls you speak of who daydream about the kind of love in the Twilight series. I am not extremely fond of Edward himself. What I am fond of is the BOND that Edward and Bella have for each other-especially on Edward's part. People need to realize that that is how many of the Twilight fans feel. EDWARD is not the object to be obsessed over. The love that is in this wonderful story should be the main focus, instead. The love Bella and Edward have for each other is so pure. He genuinely cares for her and will allow nothing to get in the way of their love.
*spoiler*
In New Moon, Edward only leaves Bella because he feels that the choice is best for her. That, in my opinion, is true love. Doing whatever it takes, even if it hurts yourself to make the other happy. Now, granted, him leaving obviously did not make Bella happy, but the idea still rings true. After Edward returns, he promises Bella he will never leave her again. He stays true to his promise through the end of Eclipse.
*spoiler complete*
So, basically, though in the beginning of their relationship, it would appear that they only spoke to each other in the first place because of looks, (and isn't that what causes us to start up a conversation with ANYONE for that matter? You can't exactly start a relationship with someone by their personality because you don't know their personality until you speak to them!) after the couple gets to know each other, they find plenty of things that they like about each other and even things they don't like, but that is what a relationship is in the first place! You know the good and bad in the other and then work with the bad to be bearable! That is how you make relationships work. There's no way to maintain a good relationship without adressing the bad.
Since I have no idea how to end my rant, I guess I'll just stop now.
=)
I loved the book twilight so apparently i'm an unintelligent airhead who has never read "true literature" and needs a job and a life according to mai and other posters. If you don't like the book that's fine, but it's incredibly rude to insult other people just because you happened to not like it, also stephenie meyer is a new author so give her some slack. Bella acted a little bit overdramatic in the second novel, which really is my only problem in the series. Also for all of you saying that the book labels girls as "stupid" yet you yourselfs insult them by saying that they can't tell reality from fiction, and that they will see the "abusive" relationship as ideal.I don't think it's abusive at all, when he's warning her that he might hurt her. That is because he is a VAMPIRE and of course he could easily hurt her, he has supernatural powers. But has he hurt her, no.Also for the people who call it simple, in some ways it is. But i love the emotional bond between Bella and Edward, it was meant to be a relationship with a twist book, not action packed or suspensfull.Well that's all i have to say, adios.
First of all, you people should really stop ranting on "how awful" Twilight is.
Think about it. If your an adult, and ranting how awful this book is, THINK! It's for a YOUTH/TEEN audience.
and, Everyone has their own opinion, and if you don't like it, too bad for you. Read it again, maybe you'll like it, I don't know. When you read a book, I suggest you consentrate on how good it is/will be instead of going, "This is stupid. There is no way it can get better." *throws book*
Second of all, I know this is long, but I would I appreciate if you would think about what Im saying.
Thirdly, I enjoyed Twilight.
And it wasn't because, "Oh my gosh Edward is so hot!!" No. Surprisingly enough, (Im not even sure why,) I imagened him as the lead singer in Guitar Hero 3, (the guy with the big chin...I know somethings wrong with me... ;p lol)
Anyway! I imagened Edward really ugly, I just couldn't find an image to match how he's described. (Now I imagine him as Light-Kun from Death Note, or how he looks in the Japanese one)
The reason I like Edward is not how hot he is. I like him because of how kind, and sweet he is to Bella. He would kill himself so she could live, he would do anything for her. I didn't fall in love with him, I fell in love with his personality.
And, no, he's not shallow at all! If he only liked her for her scent, wouldn't he have killed her, instead of fall in love with her?
Personally, I kind of hate Bella, BUT IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF TWILIGHT, IT'S NEW MOON AND ECLIPSE. SHE IS OKAY IN TWILIGHT, AND SOMEWHAT LIKABLE.(that's why I am looking forward to Midnight Sun so much! :D)
I feel, I can't step into her shoes at all, like Stephenie Meyer intended. I am a klutz, but compared to her, I am the most graceful person alive! Like in the book: "You can't walk across a path without finding something to trip over."! Besides being a klutz, I am almost nothing like her! She is an idiot. She thinks very stupidly.
Don't get me wrong, the reason I don't like her is because she's stupid, if anyones shallow, it's her, not Edward. Edward is intrigued and amazed by how "Different" and "Complex" she is, apparently.
I just think Bella is stupid.
"Oh no! I fell over! Oh no! I am going to be hit by a car! That looks like the guy who mugged me. I should go talk to him! Ooh, lookit me! Imma good with a microscope...thing. *giggles*" lol.
I guess the reason I hate Bella is because of New Moon and Eclipse, not so much Twilight, but I mean, HOW HARD IS IT TO NOTICE SOMEONES EYE COLOR CHANGING FROM BLACK TO GOLD?!?!?
She is SO stupid! She is like the biggest idiot to walk the face of the earth! And if you read them, you'll see what I mean.
For example, in Eclipse, she is evil, and pushes everyone around (Ecspecially Edward and Jake, poor guys... :( )like she's the queen of the universe. She is rude, selfish brat, who thinks she can have anything she wants, and the list goes on.
DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVE THE SERIES!
I just have a real problem with Bella.
I had a few issues with New Moon. I was like, where the hell is Edward? WHEN IS HE COMING BACK THIS IS SO BORING!
I don't care about Jacob. Sure, he's cool in New Moon, (I guess...) but he's a totall pig face in Eclipse.
Twilight is surprisingly the best book I have ever read. I can't get it out of my head. I think about the characters all the time.
I can't say the same for New Moon and Eclipse, though sadly....
There. I am done.
I hope you people think about what I said. Sure, I love the series, and I will stand up for it, but...I agree with some of you on some things.
I suppose Bella is shallow. Maybe she is? But I agree with jeff, mostly.
Thank you for listening.
Please think about what you say, before you rant on how awful a book, or anythingg is.
I've never read this book, nor do I intend to. English book are rare in my country and the thought of "YA vampire romance" quite nearly turns my stomach.
The argument that I keep hearing, and really don't understand, is that we should give some slack to Ms. Meyer simply because she is a new author. Since when were standards lower, simply because an author is published for the first time? The process of publishing means that some editor and publishing house, somewhere, thought that a manuscript would sell. And, if they are a good editor and a good publishing house, they will have high standards and then work to make the manuscript even better.
New writers do not get slack. They do not get bonus points or handicaps. This is no different from any other profession: consider the plight of the new doctor whose patient has just died due to incompetence. Should we forgive, simply because the doctor is new? Or do we sue the hospital for employing someone not yet ready for the scalpel?
Furthermore, it is not "mean" to call an author's characters shallow. Being published puts one in the public spotlight. The author's feelings have absolutely no bearing on whether a work is good or not. The point of a review is that it is not biased by the author's feelings, connections, or other outside influences. That is called censorship, and it is generally frowned upon in free societies. However, you are still welcome to your own opinion of the matter.
Thank you for an honest and true review of the festering drivel that is the Twilight Series!
What a HORRIBLE f'ing book. What dull, 2-D Characters and what horrible plotting. If I had to put this on the plot diagram in a College Class it would be a straight line.
She's an English MAJOR?
...REALLY?! Then shoudln't she edit her own work?
I understand that the Demographic is set from girls 13-19 but honestly, I've read other books from the genere that were well written. First book/series aside, these are terrible. I want the time I took to read them back!
Just because you don't like this book, doesn't mean that you're "crazy", "insane", or just plain "un-hip". You just don't wallow in abusive, mysogonist literature.
Trust me, when I picked it up I wasn't looking for the next Jane Austen, or a resplacement for Classical Fiction. If I wanted that, I'd read Pride and Prejudice over again. However, I love how she forces such analogies to Classic Lit within her book to attempt to make you feel like their relationship is star-crossed and not just co-dependent.
I honestly like nothing about Twilight. It was the worst book I have ever read. It was incredibly boring and poorly written. Stephanie Meyer is the most illiterate person to attempt writing. I know you said that you enjoyed somethings about the book, but I have to say, I hated everything. And the only good thing about New Moon was that the boring vampire boyfriend wasn't in it, but than, it just made Bella ten times more crazy about him. She even put his life in danger to have a quick orgasm to his voice. People have called me sick for not liking Twilight, but I must say, Bella Swan and Company are the sick, boring ones. Bella Swan is the worst main character, she is interested in nothing. She doesn't do sports, call friends, or even blog on the internet. She has no life, at all, she doesn't even make a fake one on cyber space. All she does is clean and cook. That's it. And what's with the "hot vampire boy" where's his personality? They describe him as beautiful, crooked smile (that Bella pisses her pants over) and nice hair. Like what the fuck is that? His siblings are just as boring. And why did the climax begin when the actual antagonist came into the scene?! Aren't we supposed to be working up to that the whole book? What the hell was that? Twilight was the worst book I have ever read and Stephanie Meyer should have practice her writing before publishing this book. I don't know how she found an agent, but they must have been smoking crack. I will say again, the worst book I have ever read. Ever read.
Hey Emily, I just wanted to leave a comment that I enjoyed your review.I disagree with you that young people are able to fully separate fantasy and reality, though -- at least when it comes to stuff like Edward's behaviour and how real men acting like this would be scary.
When you're 12 and you read this book you (probably) don't have any other references for what relationships should be like, and you won't be able to tell that Edward displays warning signs of someone abusive. That's why I think reviews like yours is important; even if no 12 year old will read something that criticises their favourite book, it might inform the parents, so that they can have a chat with their children about the it.
-headdesk- I tried to read all the comments but my eyes were burning again. sorry.
To Emily. I am a Twilight fan (not a Twilight-er, that is different) but I do agree with some of your points. It was not the best book I have ever read, nor will it ever be. But I did enjoy it. For most of the reasons that you listed to - it was an escape, a "Trashy" one and uh yeah...hawt things -noms them-
but a few of the comments given were also good - sifting through the random bash you comments of course. I enjoyed the point made by the [guy] twilight fan. You do have to read the book twice to actually pick up the smaller things to make their relationship more real. The first time I read it I was like "well...uh, shallow much?" but being the avid reader I am, I read it again and then caught the smaller things. I fault Meyer for this - to make the reality of their relationship more apparent, she needed to stop mentioning Edwards looks quiet as much. I got it the first time, he's sexy fine. I have the mental capacity to remember images that form in my head from the initial description.
I just wanted to comment that I enjoyed your points of view, very interesting and well thought out. Must try out these manga things - and read Blood and Chocolate.
I recommend the Farsala trilogy - especially if you like war ^^
I liked the book.
And then I grew up.
Her writing style was mediocre at best but that's not really what I have a problem with. What annoys my most that there is zero charcater development throughout the whole series.
Bella is selfish and vain through the entire thing. (she hates all the ugly/normal people even when they're just being nice but totally falls for Eddiekins even when he's being a prat). Not to mention that she has no personality and in my oppionon Edward is lucky that he can't read her mind because to be honest, there's not all that much there. And what is, is not worth knowing.
Edward may be hot but he's boring and obseesive and has stalker tendencies.
Jake was robbed of a decent story line (why make him fall in love with Bella? She's insufferable).
And everyone else is even more two dimentional that the aformentioned three.
What was their love based on? Yummy smelling blood and good looks?
That's not love, it's disturbing.
Hi Emily:
Thank you for you great analysis. I've just finished all 4 books and while I devoured them in an embarrassingly short amount of time, when I finished them, I found myself really frustrated with the messages in the books. Totally agree with you on the trashy part--fun, beach reading. And that her writing is pedestrian at best. Most of all, I'm glad to see posts out here in cyber-land voicing concerns about the abuser/abusee themes in the book. Great review and I look forward to exploring your blog!
Re: First off I would just like to say that i think this "Emily chick" is crazy. i thought Twilight was an AWESOME book, and Stephenie Meyer is an AMAZING author. In fact, that was the best book I've ever read! There was this fantastic, and almost unbelievable chemistry between Bella and Edward. The end of the book left you hanging, and i can't wait until the sequel(s) so i can see what happens next. LOVED ITT!!!
Clearly, you are a silly adolescent girl with no taste in literature whatsoever.
Do us and yourself a favor by going to a library and checking out a Jane Austen, Sue Monk Kidd, Tracy Chevalier, Gail Carson Levine, or Anne/Charlotte Bronte.
[Please note that most of the authors I just listed have produced wonderful novels written in the first-person narrative]
Stephenie Meyer is NOT an "AWESOME" writer. She is a woman playing author, who has a mediocre and lackluster writing style whose success can only be attributed to not her talent, but the marketing skills of her publishing company.
Ok, seriously,I do agree.
This book is trash.
I can't believe this book is one of the best sellers throughout the world? and apparently, i see people reading this book at school and i don't understand it. my friends say this is such a good book, but, come on, have you guys ever read harry potter? do you realize how great harry potter is?
personally, i don't care about the prose. but, compare it with harry potter. how dare people say twilight is just as good as harry potter..?
whatsoever, great review :D
i couldn't tolerate my friends saying this is such a great book. I'd rather read the hunger games a hundred times than read twilight ever again.
o, however, is the host by stephenie meyer good? or is it just a chick flick like twilight?
I love your comment. It does accurately describe the book. I just wish ppl at school would stop bringing it there and read it. And then the shirts...ugh...
Why doesn't Harry Potter have shirts?! If there are, why don't ppl wear them?!!
I can't believe that Harry Potter is seen on the same level as Twilight.
Twilight is too overrated, too cliche, and is just one 4 long reader insert with a fairy that girls like to call vampires.
Goodness, I am so glad that there are people out there who can take a book, whether they like it or not, and critique it and KNOW when there is something wrong with it.
The things I hate most of all is that it teaches girls that lust and love are technically the same thing, which they are not, and there is absolutely no plot in these books until, like, 200 pages to the end. That REALLY annoys me.
It's like: "La dee daaa...life is grand....oh he kissed me extra special today....HOLY CRAP BIG TWIST MY LIFE IS IN DANGAR OH NOES!!!"
Yuppers. I have a whole lot more to say, but I'm too lazy to go on about it anymore than that.
We can all get into whether or not we liked the book but at this point, what with sixty-two comments, it's been discussed to the point of overkill. What I'd like to say at this point is a sort of compare/contrast. This blog was written by a librarian who I'm sure knows her stuff. The blog shows that the author is torn on whether or not she likes/dislikes it and doesn't particularly attack it.
Most of the comments from fans show their level of reading comprehension and their foggy view of anything non-Twilight. Rather than agree with what was said supporting this book, they attack the author as if she full on Twilight-bashed. Their comments reek of silly teenage girl nonsense, are ridden with grammar issues and most of them can't seem to spell to save their lives.
On the other hand there are the anti-Twilight comments. These people have taken what Emily has said against the book and blew it out of proportion rather than release the true intention of this entry. They use this as validation for their point. However, their comments are well written, structured and the diction is above par.
Goes to show whose literary opinion is more valid.
